AP Human Geography Frequently Asked Questions
What is Human Geography?
At its simplest, human geography is the study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding. Why do we see what we see, where we see it? This will be a yearlong course in which students will analyze the changing interconnections among people and places. Students will study units focusing on population, migration, culture, industrial development, agricultural development and urban development.
What is AP? How does it benefit/affect my student?
AP is a designation given by The College Board and it stands for Advanced Placement. It provides students the opportunity to take a college level course while still in high school. In an AP class, students are prepared to take the Advanced Placement Exam in the spring. It is expected that all students enrolled in AP Human Geography will take the AP Exam. Depending on how a student scores on that exam, they may earn college credits (varies by university). When applying to college, universities will look at the AP classes taken by a student as well as their scores on the AP exams. Taking AP classes in high school shows universities you like to be challenged and that you are capable of completing college level work before you even start classes there. By taking AP Human Geography students will also be better prepared to take future AP and IB classes in the Social Sciences while in high school. As far as GPA is concerned, APHG is calculated as 5 point “A”.
What are the prerequisites for this class?
There are not any official prerequisites for the course. Students did not have to take Honors classes in 8th grade to take this class. It does help, but it is not a prerequisite. Reading comprehension is important, as students use a college level textbook. Students will be taught other necessary skills to be successful in this class. Students who are willing to challenge themselves are welcome to take the course.
What about Freshmen Seminar?
This class does not replace Freshmen Seminar. Students may enroll in Freshmen Seminar for Summer School. If summer school is not an option, students may take it concurrently with AP Human Geography.
Can my child take AP Human Geography in Summer School?
No. There is too much material required by The College Board to cover in six weeks.
What do I need to do to sign up for the class?
This is not a decision to enter into lightly. Discuss the responsibilities with your family and if you decide to take the course, you will need to include it on your course selection sheet. Choose AP Human Geography when you pick your classes for 9th grade. If you have already turned in your paperwork, you can contact your counselor to make the change.
